FC Dallas lost 1-0 at San Diego on Saturday night, and the bigger problem was in goal. Newly acquired goalkeeper Daniel de Sousa Britto left in the 16th minute with a leg injury, hurt while stopping a shot from Onni Valakari.
It was only his second start since Dallas acquired him. Daniel had already made three saves before going down. Jonathan Sirois came on and finished with four.
The goal that decided it came in the 50th minute. Alejandro Alvarado scored the first of his career, off assists from Manu Duah and rookie Kieran Sargeant, and San Diego held from there. Goalkeeper CJ dos Santos needed one save for his first clean sheet in four starts this season.
Dallas acquired Daniel from the San Jose Earthquakes on July 9 in a deal worth up to $1 million in general allocation money. He arrived with five shutouts in 15 starts for San Jose this season, which is why the timing of the injury stings for a club that thought it had solved the position.
The loss drops Dallas to 7-5-5 and marks a turn on an otherwise productive trip. The club had gone 2-1-1 across the first four games of a five-match road stretch.
San Diego, in its second season, improved to 5-7-5 and has now taken points off Dallas in both meetings, after a 3-3 draw in Texas in March.
Dallas closes the road trip Saturday at the LA Galaxy, with the goalkeeping situation the question hanging over the week.
