The Dallas Cowboys are signing Von Miller. That is a real sentence, people. This veteran pass rusher is expected to join the team after spending the 2025 season with the Washington Commanders. Adam Schefter reported that the eight-time Pro-Bowl linebacker is set to land in Dallas. Miller is from Texas and went to Texas A&M, so the move feels like a homecoming. He brings a track record of winning that the current roster needs right now.
Experience That Cannot Be Taught
The Cowboys have talked big about their Super Bowl goals all season. They say they are proud of their own work and ready for the climb. But the franchise has failed to win the big one in recent years. They lack someone who has actually been there and done that. Miller has two Super Bowl rings to his name. He also earned MVP honors for Super Bowl 50. This wisdom is invaluable to a team that is not shy about going where he has been. He knows how treacherous those playoff roads can be.
Should times turn difficult, the notion that Miller alone can rescue the situation is not my argument. He just knows the path better than anyone else on the roster. The team has failed as a group of equal novices. With the going getting tough, no one remained to keep things in check. They now possess a guide who has reached the peak of the NFL’s mountain.
A Smart Role for a Veteran Star
Let’s be honest. Miller is not the player that he once was. Okay. So? Managing pass rushing needs for the Cowboys falls to Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezeiruaku. They can start most games while Miller rests. Reserve players get life made as easy as possible by Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark when those two are subbed out. The mercenary called Von Miller can strike right here. He does not have to be VON MILLER here to be useful.
Last season, he accumulated nine sacks across 420 snaps in 17 games, including three starts. That shows he still has something left in the tank. With the Cowboys, Miller likely won’t even have to play that much. He can help raise the ceiling for the team while the foundational elements take care of the floor. Especially on key third downs, this move provides the Cowboys with another player capable of getting after the quarterback.
Mentoring the Next Generation
The timing of this signing is perfect. The Cowboys signed Von Miller just one day after Malachi Lawrence did not set the world on fire in his NFL debut. If you were expecting Malachi to do anything special then maybe you need to reassess what’s fair from an expectation standpoint. But now Malachi gets to learn from Von Miller. So does Donovan Ezeiruaku, and so does James Houston. Heck, so does Rashan Gary.
Von is a rising tide that is going to lift all boats. He provides an important mentor for the pass rushers in a way the team lacked before. As long as he’s healthy, Miller will fit just fine in Christian Parker’s scheme.
