Cooper Flagg is already a star, but the Dallas Mavericks are acting like he’s still a project. This mindset ignores a rookie season that was absolutely absurd. According to Mavs Moneyball, Flagg averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists while starting 70 games. He also won Rookie of the Year with those numbers. That isn’t a normal start for an 18-year-old; it’s a historic launch that puts him in elite company right from day one.

The Stats That Break the Scale

The numbers from his first year are wild when you look at the history books. Flagg posted 21.0 points per game, which is nearly identical to LeBron James and Luka Dončić in their debut seasons. He even grabbed more rebounds than LeBron did as a rookie. The source notes that Kevin Durant also had similar scoring output but Flagg added more playmaking. These stats define a franchise cornerstone right now.

His scoring peaks were even more shocking than his averages. To become the first teenager ever to score 50 in an NBA game, Flagg dropped 51 points against Orlando. His rookie campaign concluded with the three highest-scoring games ever by a teenager: 51, 49, and 45 points. He became the first player in league history with four 40-point games before turning 20. He also recorded three straight 30-point games, a feat no other player had done at his age. Wilt Chamberlain was tied for the fifth-most points over a two-game span by a rookie during that run, which featured back-to-back 51- and 45-point performances.

Why the Offseason Silence Is Dangerous

The Mavericks had a strange offseason with new leadership and coach Dusty May. They added useful young players but never made the massive roster move many expected. According to Mavs Moneyball, the team spent months debating if they had enough guards or which veterans to trade. This focus on minor tweaks misses the biggest picture. A ridiculous leap might be imminent for Flagg in his second year. Young superstars rarely improve in a straight line. Luka jumped from 21.2 points to 28.8 in Year 2. LeBron went from 20.9 to 27.2. Durant jumped from 20.3 to 25.3.

These stars used their second summer to get stronger and smarter. Flagg is starting from the same place but with even higher expectations. Nobody should assume he will hit 28 points per game automatically. But given what he did at 18 and 19, a huge jump should be the normal expectation. The quiet offseason feels strange because Flagg could speed up the timeline for Dallas. The team may not need to wait three or four years before worrying about winning. He might be ready to start doing it now. The clock is ticking faster than the front office realizes.
