Dallas fell to the Giants, and the reasons behind that 28-20 stumble are now painfully clear. The team simply didn’t play hard enough or physical enough. Owner Jerry Jones admitted he was “surprised and dismayed” by the lack of effort, telling 105.3 The Fan that he expected more from his squad. It wasn’t the dominant unit fans have grown used to seeing; something is broken, and it starts with the mindset.
The Defense Needs A Wake-Up Call
The defensive unit looked lost from the very first snap. New coordinator Christian Parker had his first real game calling plays, and it showed immediately. The Giants converted on nine of their eleven third-down tries, a failure of the highest order that left everyone in shock. The pass rush struggled against Jaxson Dart – when rushing four defenders, Dallas managed just two pressures on 20 dropbacks (their lowest four-man pressure rate since 2021), and blitzes didn’t fare much better, as the Giants usually had an answer for them. According to Blogging The Boys, the defensive ends couldn’t set the edge, got lost in coverage, and looked slow. Even the best player on the field, Donovan Ezeiruaku, couldn’t carry the whole unit alone. He posted a great 86.5 grade, but the rest of the group was invisible. The defense has a long way to go before it can stop anyone.
Penalties remain a massive problem that just won’t go away. Dallas has led the NFL in penalties in 2025, and they were called for nine infractions against the Giants, totaling 90 yards. The worst one came late in the fourth quarter when Javonte Williams, the running back, received a taunting penalty following a touchdown. This cost the team a two-point conversion attempt and changed the entire strategy for the final minutes. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer has to fix this immediately because it’s a glaring issue that has plagued Dallas for a decade. The team can’t win if they keep giving free yards to the other side.
The Offense Has No Answers Yet
The running game was virtually nonexistent all night long. Dallas only gained 69 yards on the ground and averaged a pathetic 3.8 yards per carry. The Giants controlled the clock for over 36 minutes while Dallas only held the ball for 23. The offense finished with 244 total yards, which is far too low. Yahoo Sports noted that the team has no excuse for this performance given they have Dak Prescott, George Pickens, and CeeDee Lamb. They should be scoring more points. The offense needs to establish the run to help the passing game. Without that, the defense stays on the field too long, leading to the tired players seen in the third quarter. The team faces Washington next Sunday, so they must bounce back fast or the season could turn ugly. Jerry Jones said the last time there was this much change was when he bought the team.
