Jerry Jones Wants Real Rivalries, Not Just More Games

Jerry Jones hints the NFL should embrace geographic rivalries. The Cowboys owner says it's time for "my town against your town" games.

The Dallas Cowboys proved their “pick-your-poison” strategy works against the Houston Texans on Sunday. This isn’t just a theory anymore. It is a fact that the offense created a nightmare for defenses by forcing them to choose between two elite threats. The result was a 34-30 victory where both receivers made huge plays when it mattered most.

Two Weapons, One Problem

George Pickens didn’t get many chances to touch the ball, yet he made his two receptions count. Per reports, Pickens caught a contested 53-yard pass to set up a second-half touchdown. He also grabbed a critical 22-yard catch that made a go-ahead score possible in the final minute. Meanwhile, CeeDee Lamb had a career night with 17 catches for 189 yards on 21 targets.

Coach Brian Schottenheimer explained the logic behind this approach clearly. “The beauty of our offense is if you want to try to take away George or try to take away CeeDee, we got another guy over there that’s pretty good,” Schottenheimer said. The Texans tried to double Lamb, but that left Pickens open. When Houston switched to cover Pickens, Lamb exploded for 11 first-down catches.

Engineering a Win

George Pickens called this offensive scheme “engineering victory.” He noted that defenses never know who will get the ball, so they often switch up their coverage. “When you’re doing that, and it’s part of the plan, and you never know what a defense will do, they’ll probably switch it up, double him,” Pickens said. This confusion is exactly what the Cowboys wanted to see.

Dak Prescott knows the math favors his stars. “If you’re going to do that, the numbers are in favor of CeeDee,” Prescott said. “If you’re going to play CeeDee like that, the numbers are in favor of George Pickens.” The stats back this up. When the Texans tried to stop one, the other thrived. This balance is why the offense looks unstoppable right now.

Thursday Night Challenge

The Cowboys face a new test Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to Sports Illustrated, the Bucs are 0-4 and will start rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels. Coach Todd Bowles confirmed Daniels will start again. “Yeah, he’ll be the quarterback Thursday night,” Bowles said. Tampa Bay is missing key players like safety Antoine Winfield, giving Dallas a clear edge.

The Cowboys need to keep their run game going after averaging just 3.0 yards per carry. They also need to fix special teams issues that have cost them points this season. But with Lamb and Pickens healthy and firing on all cylinders, the offense should score plenty of points. If the defense can step up, Dallas will extend their winning streak and keep the pressure on the rest of the division.
