The most surprising fact about the Dallas Cowboys’ 2026 preseason isn’t a stat or a contract. It is that the team’s defense, which was described as very poor in 2025, has suddenly turned into a fight club.

Under new leadership in 2025, a very poor Cowboys defense receives a complete makeover. This shift in attitude culminated in a joint practice with the New Orleans Saints that was chippy as all get out. Since that joint practice and before it, the Saints have not truly experienced any issues with scuffles. The fight was unique to this specific matchup in Oxnard.

Our new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, has restored swagger to the defensive side of the ball, according to Yahoo Sports. This new energy seems to have rubbed off on everyone, even the offensive side. Because Brian Schottenheimer is also a high-energy coach, friendly banter and interplay exist between the offense and defense.

While training camp featured intensity and a certain amount of energy, we have not witnessed the scuffles from that joint practice. Blogging The Boys reporter David Halprin observed that the fighting appeared abnormal compared to how the Cowboys usually conduct most of their practices.

A Helmet Pulled in Oxnard

The physical nature of the day was not subtle. On August 18, 2026, at River Ridge Playing Fields in Oxnard, California, Donovan Ezeiruaku #6 of the Dallas Cowboys ripped off the helmet of Taliese Fuaga #75 of the New Orleans Saints during a joint practice.

This incident seemed very isolated since we saw little else like it until the joint practice. The league does not usually see this level of heat this early in the year. Only OLB Donovan Ezeiruaku, ejected from the Saints practice, was also ordered to leave an earlier training camp practice due to a similar fighting problem.

This suggests Parker is not afraid to push his players to the edge. The goal is to create a unit that can handle the rough stuff before the real season starts. If the team can channel this anger into tackles instead of penalties, the 2026 defense could be a force.

The Saints will travel to Arlington to play the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium during Week 3 of the 2026 NFL preseason. This upcoming game will be the first real test of whether this new swagger can hold up against a full-contact opponent. The fans in Arlington will be watching closely to see if the defense keeps the heat turned up.

While I cannot confirm the exact events of that joint practice, the altercation seemed unusual compared to how the Cowboys typically run their sessions. The team is clearly trying to shed its old identity and build something tougher.

The transformation is happening right now. The 2025 version of this unit would not have pulled helmets. The 2026 version is willing to risk ejection to show they mean business. This is the kind of change that wins games in the fourth quarter.

The upcoming preseason schedule will show if this is just a flash in the pan or a new standard. The Cowboys need this kind of fire to survive the tough division. The Saints game in Week 3 will be the perfect place to see if the defense is truly ready.
