Dak Prescott has stopped pretending the Dallas offense has a clear plan. Nine weeks into the 2026 season, the quarterback offered a stark admission about the team’s direction. “Is it one we’re proud of? I don’t know,” Prescott said Thursday, according to CBS Sports.

Numbers That Tell The Real Story

The stats from CBS Sports show an offense that has lost its edge. Pre-snap motion and play action usage in Dallas are near the bottom of the NFL, with the latter occurring far less than last year. Under coach Brian Schottenheimer, the team now sits 31st in motion rate and 21st in play-action rate. The offense has become less varied and less friendly for the quarterback, even though the talent level remains high. Dallas averages 27.4 points per game, but the lack of variety makes every drive feel like a struggle.

Pickens has been a major casualty of this shift. In the last two contests, he was targeted merely 10 times despite ranking as a top explosive playmaker on the roster. CBS News reported that this lack of targets has raised serious questions about the game plan. “A little bit of it is unlucky, a little bit of it is we have to design stuff that forces the issue to him,” Klayton Adams said. The team cannot win if its best weapons are left on the sidelines while the scheme gets stale.

A Coach And Quarterback On Different Pages

A clear disconnect has formed between Schottenheimer and Prescott. The coach seems to believe that using motion clouds the picture for the quarterback, especially when trailing. Prescott sees it differently. “Sometimes, it’s [motion] just to dress it up and take the defense, give them a different look of us running a core play and breaking some tendencies with a motion to get this play done,” Prescott said. He also noted that motion helps him see disguises and create better matchups. The coach wants to simplify the view, but the quarterback needs that extra layer of data to win.

This friction matters because the defense cannot carry the team forever. The porous defense continues to struggle, and the offense must find a way to score without relying on luck. CeeDee Lamb highlighted the importance of the connection between receivers, stating, “Everything that I’ve been able to accomplish has been because of him and what he’s done the year before and vice versa.” If the coaching staff ignores these voices, the season could slip away faster than anyone expects.

The Next Test In Indianapolis

The Cowboys play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Nov. 8. The offense must fix its identity before facing a Colts defensive line that is dangerous in the middle. With five sacks and 16 pressures, Adetomiwa Adebawore has quietly assembled an excellent season. If the Cowboys do not get back to a varied attack, they will struggle against a team that can punish poor protection.

Pickens needs targets, and Prescott needs a system that works. “We’ll be better, I can promise,” Prescott said, according to CBS Sports. That promise is a factor in the team’s attempt to avoid a long winter. The fans in Dallas want to see a team that plays to its strengths, not a group that hides behind a rigid plan.
