Cowboys fans demand Nick Sorensen's firing after another blocked kick. Loud calls for change despite the win over Houston.

The Dallas Cowboys lost to the New York Giants 28-20 in their season opener, and the numbers tell a harsh story. The Giants rushed for 165 yards and controlled the clock for over 36 minutes. This was not a close call; it was a physical beatdown on the road at MetLife Stadium. The reality on the field was simple. The Giants wanted a physical game, and the Cowboys could not match that force.

Coach Says They Need To Do More

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer did not mince words about the team’s effort after reviewing the tape. He stated clearly that his team was not physical enough in the loss to open the 2026 season. The Giants ran the ball effectively, with running back Cam Skattebo gaining 81 yards on 18 carries and scoring a touchdown. Quarterback Jaxson Dart added 54 rushing yards on 11 carries to keep the offense moving. As a unit, the Cowboys managed only 3.8 yards per carry on offense, while their defense allowed the Giants to average 4.5 yards per rush. The Cowboys’ running game suffered because Schottenheimer acknowledged the Giants were the more physical team.

Some players on the defensive line pushed back against the idea that they lacked physicality. Yet, the stats do not lie. The Giants dominated the line of scrimmage, and the Cowboys’ defense could not get off the field.

Communication Breakdowns Cost Big

The issue was not just about hitting hard; it was about who was making the stops. Linebackers failed to make tackles after defensive linemen took on blocks, leaving runners free to gain extra yards.

New defensive end Rashan Gary, who did not play for the team last season, also saw the issues. The Giants exploited this lack of cohesion, using a throwback style of football to control the game in the fourth quarter. The Giants ended the game by kneeling three times in the victory formation after taking control late. The Cowboys have a chance to fix these mistakes when they host the Washington Commanders in Week 2. They must tighten up their run defense and get their communication right, or they will face even bigger problems against a mobile quarterback like Jayden Daniels.
