Jerry Jones Says No Coaching Change While Witten Gets New Role

Jerry Jones claims a coaching change isn't on his mind after a 3-5 start, even as Cowboys legend Jason Witten takes a new job at Oklahoma.

Jalen Carter just paid a steep price for losing his cool against Dallas. After the whistle sounded, the NFL penalized him $12,537 for hitting Cowboys tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford in the neck and face. That number comes straight from the league’s Week 7 accountability report released on Saturday, per Heavy.com. It is a huge sum for one player, especially when you see the Cowboys only had two other fines combined that were smaller. Carter has a history of making bad choices against this team, and this latest outburst shows he still cannot handle the pressure of a Monday night game.

The Hit That Got Caught

The incident happened late in the third quarter with the Eagles holding a slim 21-20 lead. Carter and Spann-Ford were supposed to be blocking each other on a run by Javonte Williams, but they kept fighting after the play ended. Carter landed a couple of shots to Spann-Ford’s face and neck without getting a flag on the field. Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman saw it instantly on the broadcast and said, “Here’s Jalen Carter taking a shot at Brevyn Spann-Ford — a couple (of shots),” according to Heavy.com. Aikman added, “He’ll be hearing from the league.” He was right. The league did not wait long to send the bill.

What makes this fine so ugly is how it changed the momentum of the game. Following Carter’s physical play, Dak Prescott connected with CeeDee Lamb for a 16-yard touchdown. Dallas took a 28-21 lead that they never surrendered after Prescott ran in the two-point conversion himself. Carter’s anger gave the Cowboys the extra gas they needed to pull away. Instead of focusing on stopping the run, he wasted his energy on a personal feud that cost his team the win. This is not the behavior of a star player trying to help his team survive a losing streak.

A Pattern of Bad Behavior

This is the sixth fine of Carter’s career, and the total amount he has paid since 2023 is now over $127,000. He was ejected last season for spitting on Dak Prescott, which cost him $57,222 and a one-game suspension. He also paid $17,445 for a hit on Washington’s Tyler Biadasz in the NFC Championship Game. The pattern is clear: Carter gets heated, he lashes out, and he pays the price while his team suffers. According to Heavy.com, when Eagles beat writer EJ Smith attempted to speak with him in the locker room post-game, Carter dismissed him saying, “Nah, y’all have a good night.”

The Eagles are now 0-5 in their last five games, their longest losing streak since 2016. They need Carter to be a force against the quarterback, not a distraction after the whistle. The Cowboys improved to 3-4 with this win, while Philadelphia’s season looks lost. A Dallas player had not reached 150 rushing yards since Ezekiel Elliott in 2018, until Javonte Williams achieved a career-high 155 rushing yards. Prescott threw three touchdowns in the 38-21 victory.
