Chris Young Admits Rangers Failed To Build Real Depth

Texas Rangers president Chris Young admits the team lacked necessary depth. Fans say the front office must fix competition before 2027.

The most surprising move by the Dallas Mavericks has nothing to do with their star point guard. Instead, the team quietly replaced a group of aging veterans with fourteen players all aged twenty-five or younger. This massive shift turns the roster into the youngest squad in the league. Per Mavs Moneyball, the front office cleared out old contracts to load up on athletic, rangy talent. The goal is simple: build a team around nineteen-year-old Cooper Flagg.

The Great Reset

Just six months ago, the lineup featured players like Anthony Davis, who is thirty-three. Dante Exum was thirty-one, and D’Angelo Russell sat at thirty. The team traded these veterans along with Jaden Hardy to acquire Khris Middleton and Marvin Bagley. That initial trade brought in a thirty-four-year-old Middleton and a twenty-seven-year-old Bagley. But the roster churn did not stop there. Per Mavs Moneyball, all three of those new arrivals have since moved on to other teams.

This rapid turnover cleared a major financial crunch for the franchise. It also made the team significantly younger in a single offseason. The new strategy focuses on players who are agile and tall. The shortest player on the current list is Marcus Sasser at six-foot-one. Yet he possesses an insane six-foot-seven wingspan that rivals much taller defenders.

A Roster Full of Teens

The new core includes nine fresh faces joining five returning players under the age limit. Cooper Flagg leads the group at just nineteen years old. He is joined by Morez Johnson, who the team drafted with the ninth pick last month. Zaccharie Risacher arrived via a trade this week to add more scoring depth. The list also features Jett Howard, Tobi Lawal, and Sergio De Larrea. All of them are twenty-five or younger.

Returning standouts like Dereck Lively and Max Christie fit perfectly into this new mold. Lively is twenty-two and stands at seven-foot-one. The front office, led by Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz, clearly has a specific vision. They want to build around Flagg with a group that can run the floor. Per Mavs Moneyball, they found clever ways to get assets despite a thin roster from the previous regime.

Why This Matters

This youth movement changes the identity of the team entirely. The Mavericks are no longer relying on veteran experience to win games. Instead, they are betting on speed, length, and raw potential. Not every player on this list will make the rotation when the season starts. Some might be on two-way deals or even waived before opening night. But the direction is undeniable.

The front office is building a team that can compete for a decade. They have moved away from the “win now” mindset of the past. This approach might mean some growing pains in the short term. However, it sets a high ceiling for the future. The question is no longer if they will be young, but how good they can get.

Lively may still be recovering from an injury as the season approaches. Others like Howard and Ishchenko face uncertain roles. Yet the vision remains clear. The Mavericks have ushered in a new era defined by youth. Fans should expect a fast-paced, athletic style of play. The rebuild is officially underway around their young star.
