The Dallas Cowboys have a narrow window to fix their defense before the season starts. They cannot wait for rookies to develop while the regular season begins. The team needs proven veterans who can step in and play right away. Blogging The Boys reports that five specific free agents could solve these roster holes immediately. Signing these players is the only smart move for a team with Super Bowl hopes.
The Pass Rush Must Have Depth
Von Miller is the top name on the list of available veterans. He recently stated he wants to play for the Cowboys and the interest seems mutual. His days as a full-time starter are likely over, but he still has gas left in the tank. According to Blogging The Boys, Miller logged nine QB sacks and 19 pressures last season with the Commanders. He played just 37% of the defensive snaps yet still made a huge impact. The Cowboys need that kind of veteran presence to mentor their young pass rushers. They cannot rely solely on Donovan Ezeiruaku to carry the load. Miller would provide the instant boost the defense needs to be scary.
Stabilize The Linebacker Room
Bobby Wagner is another familiar name who could join the roster. The 36-year-old just finished his 14th season with over 100 tackles. He started all 17 games in 2025 for the Commanders. Per Blogging The Boys, he accumulated 162 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions last year. Wagner may not be the player he once was, but he is highly consistent. The Cowboys have concerns about DeMarvion Overshown’s health and lack depth at the position. Adding Wagner would stabilize the entire linebacker corps. It is a low-risk move that guarantees a high floor for the defense. This is exactly the kind of smart roster building Dallas needs.
Add A Running Back Who Can Run
The offense also needs a reliable running back to pair with Javonte Williams. Joe Mixon missed the entire 2025 season with a foot injury but is still a top talent. He is the soon-to-be 30-year-old two-time Pro Bowl runner who can do it all. According to Blogging The Boys, Mixon had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons before his injury. His addition would give Dallas another starting-caliber back. Throw second-year RB Jaydon Blue in the mix and the team would have an impressive trio. This depth is missing from the current roster. The Cowboys must add Mixon to fix this glaring weakness.
Taylor Decker is also available after his release from the Detroit Lions. He graded out as the 41st overall offensive tackle last year. The Cowboys need to be aggressive in the final days of the offseason. They have the cap space and the need to make these moves. Signing these veterans turns a hopeful roster into a contender.
