The Dallas Cowboys are in a mess, and the fans know it. A fresh survey from Blogging The Boys asks a simple question: If you were Jerry Jones, would you fire head coach Brian Schottenheimer? The answer from the fan base is a loud and clear yes. The team is now 2-4 following a 23-13 defeat against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. This slump has pushed the pressure cooker to the breaking point.

Stephen A. Smith thinks the clock is ticking for the owner to act. He told Jerry Jones to make a big decision before Halloween. Smith argued that the effort and fight the coach talks about just are not there. “Jerry Jones is responsible for the assemblage of all of that,” Smith said on First Take. “The buck stops with him.” The owner built the roster, so the owner must fix the mess when the team fails to execute.

The Hot Seat Gets Hotter

Mike Tomlin, the former Steelers coach, joked that the Cowboys are in deep trouble. He noted that any team needing a players-only meeting is “dead.” This joke landed hard after the team lost at Lambeau Field. The loss dropped the Cowboys to a dismal 2-4 record and exposed major flaws in their game plan.

Insiders are already talking about what comes next. NFL insider Josina Anderson wrote that a league source says the current head coach needs to make the playoffs just to keep his job. Anderson writes that, “As of right now,” the feeling is this current head coach must reach the playoffs at least to retain their job. That is a very low bar for a team with such high expectations and a massive payroll.

Time to Rethink the Plan

The fan survey highlights a split in opinion, but the anger is real. Some fans feel the sample size is too small to judge the coach after only six games. They point out that the NFC East is still wide open. But others argue that the team has the talent to win and is just wasting it. The offense could not get going against Green Bay, and the defense gave up too many big plays.

Stephen Jones says the family still believes in the staff, but that might change soon. The next game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night could decide the season. If the team loses again, the call to fire Schottenheimer will become impossible to ignore.
