Most people think trash talk is the only way to get under a defender’s skin. They are wrong. Sometimes the quietest, nicest guy on the floor is the one who makes you want to scream. That is exactly what happened to Channing Frye when he had to guard Dirk Nowitzki. The former Dallas Mavericks legend did not need to say a word to rattle opponents. He just needed to be himself.

Why Nice Was The Worst Weapon

On a recent episode of the Roadtrippin podcast, a fan asked Frye who made him the angriest during his 14-year career. Frye did not hesitate. He pointed straight at Dirk. That simple answer hit hard because it flipped the script on how players usually try to get in each other’s heads.

Frye watched Dirk closely and loved his game, but the matchup was a nightmare. Dirk was an inch taller and could shoot from anywhere. He was smart and strong. Frye admitted he was just tired of guarding such a tough player. The real kicker came after Dirk scored 40 points and then acted like a perfect gentleman. Frye captured that frustration perfectly when he said, “Shut up, Dirk… I hate that you’re nice and I like you.” You cannot fight a guy who is being kind while he destroys your team.

The 2011 Finals Proved The Point

Dirk did not just annoy Frye with his personality. He proved he was the toughest opponent in the league during the 2011 NBA Finals. Mavs Moneyball reported that Dirk battled a 102-degree fever in Game 4 but still pushed through to help Dallas tie the series 2-2. That was the moment the heat turned up on the Miami stars. In the American Airlines Center hallways, fake coughing was used by LeBron James and Dwyane Wade to mock Dirk’s sickness.

Dirk never showed any visible anger at those taunts. He simply stayed the course and kept scoring. He torches Miami night after night until he won the championship in six games on their home court. That silence and focus must have pissed off Wade and LeBron even more than Frye.
