Tyler Smith returns to practice and Dak Prescott sheds his hand wrap. The Cowboys have a real shot at fixing their defense before Thursday.

The head coach did not plan for the viral moment. Brian Schottenheimer had no idea his rookie lineman would deliver a speech that would sweep across social media. The Dallas Cowboys’ win over the Arizona Cardinals set the stage for something raw and unexpected.

Schottenheimer invited Shiyazh Pete to address the team after seeing the huge reaction from the crowd. The undrafted rookie played just six snaps in the fourth quarter and remains a long shot for the final roster. Yet fans in the stands showed up in large numbers to support him.

Pete is the first member of the Navajo Nation to sign with an NFL team. Arizona has a sizable Native American population, which made the game feel like a homecoming.

A Moment of Pure Authenticity

The speech started simply. “Well, that was an incredible win,” Pete told the team. He spoke about the honor of wearing the star. “I am very fortunate to be amongst you and to play in the same field and wear the same star holden on our chest,” he said.

He continued: “Man, this game, fate brought us here as strangers, but this game, this star, this team will make us brothers.” The locker room erupted. Pete later called the standing ovation incredible.

Schottenheimer noted the honesty of the moment. “It’s a storyline where you have a guy who’s fighting his butt off trying to make the team, but when you give him an opportunity, deservedly so, to address the group, it was very raw. It was very authentic,” he said.

Why the Speech Hit So Hard

The coach knew the media had captured something special. “It’s amazing that our social media team, the media in general, captured it because it was what this team and really the game of football is all about,” Schottenheimer said. He even joked that Pete has a better track record for postgame talks and cleaner language.

Schottenheimer also recalled an offseason story that showed the connection. During a ride to the airport, a driver told him about an interaction with Pete the day before, describing him as one of the most incredible people he had met. That background helped explain why the moment landed so hard with the team.

Pete took time to thank the fans. “I want to take the moment to thank all the fans, and the people who showed up to support me, and to celebrate my name and to wear my jersey,” he said. “And I’m proud of us, proud of how far we’ve come.”

What This Means for the Roster

The viral clip shows the culture the Cowboys are trying to build. Fans often respond to heart as much as stats. Pete played a limited role on the field but made a clear impact in the locker room.

Schottenheimer admits he did not see this coming. He simply gave a young player a chance to speak because he had earned it. That decision created a moment that will stick longer than the final score.
