The Dallas Cowboys lost 24-16 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night, and the mood is dark. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer knows the team needs to change fast. He told reporters on Friday that the staff will not make excuses. They will fix the issues. The owner, Jerry Jones, was not happy watching his team get dominated for four quarters. This loss hurts, but the reaction matters more than the score.

The Coach Owes Answers

Schottenheimer said the team is solution-makers, not excuse-makers. He spoke about having hard conversations with his staff. The coach admitted they are studying the film to find the problems. This includes all three phases of the game, not just the defense. The Buccaneers are a bad team, yet Dallas let them run the ball between the tackles. That was a surprise to everyone. Jones called the loss “extraordinarily, extraordinarily disappointed” in his postgame interview. He noted that Tampa Bay was very physical. The Cowboys failed to stop them when it mattered most. A coach cannot keep losing to bad teams and expect the same results. Something has to give.

Big Money, Bigger Mistakes

The roster looks expensive, but the play does not match the price tag. In 2025, a total of $144 million was committed by the Cowboys to cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Jake Ferguson, per Yahoo Sports. That is a huge amount of money. Ferguson signed for $52 million while Bland got $92 million. These deals came right after the team traded away Micah Parsons. The plan was to show fans they still had a future. Now, that future looks shaky. Ferguson dropped a pass on the final drive against Tampa Bay. He also fumbles too much and cannot block. Bland is supposed to be a star, but the defense still struggles. Spending this much cash on players who cannot finish games is a disaster.

Injuries also hurt the team on Thursday night. Per reports, left tackle Tyler Guyton left the game with a back strain. X-rays came back negative, but he was replaced by Broderick Jones. Guyton was seen holding his back before heading to the locker room. The team lost its momentum and its starters. Jerry Jones said Guyton was dealing with a strain after the game. The loss to the Buccaneers was a catastrophe. The fans are tired of watching big names fail to perform. Schottenheimer says changes are coming.
