Texas Rangers president Chris Young admits the team lacked necessary depth. Fans say the front office must fix competition before 2027.

The Dallas Mavericks frontcourt is a mess right now. Injuries to Dereck Lively II, Morez Johnson Jr., and Santi Aldama have opened the door for a desperate scramble. Three players are fighting to keep their spots on the roster as training camp heats up. The team needs depth, but they also need performance. This is not just about filling minutes; it is about survival in a tough league.

The Veteran Leader Under Fire

Dwight Powell is the man everyone knows, but that might not save him. The Mavericks re-signed Powell to a one-year deal before camp started. They told him they would try to keep him, per Sports Illustrated. He is the longest-tenured player on the team, having arrived in the 2014-15 season. That history matters, but the new coaching staff wants to see what he can do now. Powell must prove he can still contribute four or five minutes if needed. If he cannot, his time in Dallas might finally be over.

Seth Lundy is in an even tighter spot. He signed an Exhibit-10 contract, which is often a last-ditch effort. Lundy was a second-round pick in 2023 and played only nine games for the Atlanta Hawks. He bounced around to the Clippers and was waived last offseason. His only hope is his Summer League show. He averaged 20 points per game while shooting 44 percent from three for Toronto. That numbers game is his only ticket in. He needs to show the team he belongs, or his NBA career ends here.

The Expensive Wing Who Must Deliver

Caleb Martin has a contract that makes the math hard. He still has two years left and is making more than $19 million. That is a lot of money for a player who has been bad since arriving in Dallas. The trade that brought him over to the Mavericks was described as horrific by the media. Even when he showed moments of brilliance previously, Martin has never excelled as an offensive player. His defense is the only thing keeping him on the roster for now. The team is exploring every option to move on if he cannot prove his defense is still good enough.

The situation is made worse by the injuries to the young stars. Morez Johnson Jr. has been limited in practice due to an unknown issue. Head coach Dusty May addressed the situation directly. “He’s [Johnson] had a little limited time in practice, but he’s working his way back,” May said after a training camp practice. He added that Johnson is close to returning. This uncertainty forces the team to look at the veterans and the bench players for immediate help.

Who Gets the Final Cut

The front office has a tough choice to make. They cannot carry dead weight when the season starts. The injuries to Lively and Aldama mean these three players get a real shot at the rotation. But they must perform. The Mavericks are looking for a stable mix of young and old, according to Yahoo Sports. If Powell, Lundy, or Martin cannot step up, they will be cut loose.
